The Effect of KR Withdrawal on Learning a Coincident Timing Task

Abstract
ABSTRACT-A controversial issue regarding the effect of KR on learning a task with ongoing visual information available was reexamined with a coincident timing task. Subjects were required to learn to time accurately a 40cm right-handed sweeping
movement(similar to batting movement) with a moving light signal on the Bassin Anticipation Timer. Forty subjects were equally divided into four groups which have received different numbers of KRs for 14 blocks of 5 trials, i.e., in 4¡¿14
factorial
design with repeated-measures on block. KRs were withdrawn after the first 10th, 40th, and 75th trials depending on the kinds of the groups, respectively. Subjects were subsequently tested with two different speeds of stimulus light in transfer
conditions along with a retention test 10 minutes and an hour after the acquisition phase, respectively. Absolute timing errors measured in msec through IBM computed were subjected to two-way ANOVA. The results indicated that the withdrawal of
KRs
had a
significant effect on performance in acquisition phase, but not in retention and transfer phases. Therefore, the results were interpreted to suggest that KR withdrawal is a significant performance variable while it has no permanent effect on
performance, i.e., on learning, especially in case of the coincident timing task where visual intrinsic feedback information is available in ongoing task performance.
